Avian influenza (AI) viruses are categorized based on two protein groups: hemagglutinin (“H”) proteins, numbering from H1 to H16, and neuraminidase (“N”) proteins, ranging from N1 to N9. H7N4 is a subtype of the Influenza A virus species. In 1997, a highly pathogenic strain led to a small flu outbreak among chickens in New South Wales, Australia. There have also been reported cases of human infections with A(H7N4) viruses.
