Animal diarrhea viruses are a group of viruses that cause diarrhea in animals, the most common being bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). BVDV is a single-stranded RNA that is found in bovine and other ruminants around the world, and its clinical symptoms can manifest as mucosal disease, diarrhea, abortion, stillbirths and deformed fetuses in females, causing great economic losses to the bovine industry. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), a member of the genus Alphacoronavirus of the family Coronaviridae of the order Nestoviridae, causes vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and high mortality in newborn piglets, which has had a catastrophic impact on the global pig industry.

Since animal diarrhea viruses cause huge economic losses to the farming industry, the detection of diarrhea viruses is crucial for the control and treatment of diarrheal diseases in ruminants and pigs. Virus isolation technique is one of the basic methods for laboratory detection of bovine viral diarrhea virus and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, and the isolated viruses can be used for the study of pathogenic mechanism and transmission route.
