Avian reovirus (ARV) is a non-enveloped virus with an icosahedral capsid. The genome of ARV is a double-stranded RNA composed of 10 gene fragments, which are divided into three groups according to the electrophoretic mobility: small fragments (S1-S4), medium fragments (M1-M3) and large fragments (L1-L3). ARV can infect a variety of birds, causing diseases such as dwarf syndrome, pericarditis, myocarditis, and viral arthritis/tendonitis. ARV is widely prevalent worldwide and has had a great impact on the poultry farming industry and socio-economics.

In recent years, with the development of biotechnology, several methods have been developed for the detection of avian reovirus. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) is the standard test for detecting antibodies in avian serum, but it is laborious and prone to false positive results. In contrast, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is easier to standardize and more sensitive, which is suitable for detecting high-throughput samples and is an effective serological method to meet the requirements of epidemic prevention. Currently, researchers have developed several ELISA assays that use ARV single structural proteins as antigens to generate antibodies to reduce non-specific responses.
