Parvovirus is single-stranded DNA virus without capsids, and their viral particles are small, 23-28 nm in diameter. The genome of parvovirus contains two genes, NS/rep and VP/cap, encoding three capsid viral proteins (VP1, VP2 and VP3) and two nonstructural proteins (NS1 and NS2). The size of the VP proteins varies among different parvovirus. Animal parvoviruses were first discovered in the 1960s, and canine parvovirus, feline parvovirus, and porcine parvovirus are some of the most common animal parvoviruses. Canine parvovirus and feline parvovirus cause severe disease in dogs and cats, respectively, and porcine parvovirus is a major cause of infertility.
Figure 1. Structure of capsid of (A) rat parvovirus (H-1 PV), (B) minute virus of mice (MVM) and (C) canine parvovirus (CPV). The capsids range in size from 18 to 26 nm with icosahedral symmetry consisting of two, three, five-fold axes and have variable regions that affect virus-host cell interactions (Arora, Richa, et al. 2021).
Parvovirus infections can cause highly contagious animal diseases. Common clinical symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and bloating, severe diarrhea, fever or hypothermia, etc. Parvoviruses seriously affect animal health and cause huge economic losses. Therefore, the detection of parvovirus is crucial for the diagnosis of animal diseases. Virus isolation techniques are the gold standard for parvovirus detection, and researchers have developed a wide variety of reagents for parvovirus isolation.
BioVenic is a leading supplier of diagnostic reagents for animal diseases, serving veterinarians, animal disease researchers and animal breeders. We have a significant technical platform for virus isolation, identification and testing and technical staff with extensive working experience in pathogen biology, microbiology, genomics and kit development. We can develop a range of parvovirus isolation kits for you to study its infection mechanism and transmission route. If you have any needs, please feel free to contact us.
