Avian Reovirus PCR Kit Development

Avian reoviruses are members of the Orthoreovirus genus, one of the 12 genera of the Reoviridae family. Avian reovirus is an envelope-free and double-stranded RNA virus. The particle consists of a 60 nm diameter inner protein shell (i.e., core) surrounded by an 81 nm diameter outer protein shell (i.e., coat). Avian reovirus is widespread in poultry. The susceptibility of chickens to avian reoviruses infection is age-dependent, with older chickens being more resistant to infection and virus-induced lesions. Although infection does not usually result in disease, avian reovirus may occasionally be involved in several disease syndromes, of which viral arthritis/tendonitis in chickens is the most important, especially in broiler breeds. Avian reoviruses can cause considerable economic losses in the poultry industry annually.

Avian Reovirus PCR Kit Development

Although avian reovirus is ubiquitous among poultry flocks, they have been poorly characterized at the molecular level in the past. However, with the rapid development of biotechnology, various efficient PCR technologies have been developed and used for reoviruses detection. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), as a diagnostic technique, is generally known as a very sensitive, specific and rapid tool for virus detection. Multiple PCR techniques have been demonstrated for the detection of avian reovirus, including conventional PCR, RT-PCR, real-time RT-PCR, multiplex RT-PCR, duplex rRT-PCR, nested PCR, etc. A variety of optimized PCR techniques are increasingly being used to detect reovirus because they are not only highly sensitive and efficient, but also avoid the high risk that traditional PCR assays may be hampered by contamination of previously amplified material.
