Bluetongue virus is an RNA virus belonging to the genus Reoviridae of the Circovirus family. Its genome contains 10 double-stranded RNA fragments that encode 7 structural proteins VP1-VP7 and at least 4 non-structural proteins NS1 and NS2, NS3/NS3A, NS4 and possibly NS5. Bluetongue virus particles are 20-hedral with a diameter of 53-60 nm, without a capsule outside, but with a layer of fine villi-like structure. Bluetongue is a viral infection of ruminants, mainly in sheep and cattle. Symptoms of bluetongue mainly include fever, leukopenia, oral ulcers, coronitis, facial and pulmonary edema, vascular thrombosis, and necrosis of infected tissue.
Figure 1. Schematic representation of bluetongue virus (BTV). (A) The bluetongue viral particle is composed of an outer capsid that consists of the VP2 and VP5 proteins, and an inner core formed by the VP7 and VP3 proteins. (B) The segmented genome of BTV encodes for 7 structural proteins (VP1 to VP7) and at least 4 non-structural proteins (NS1 to NS4) (Rojas, José M., et al. 2021).
Parvovirus infections can cause highly contagious animal diseases. Common clinical symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and bloating, severe diarrhea, fever or hypothermia, etc. Parvoviruses seriously affect animal health and cause huge economic losses. Therefore, the detection of parvovirus is crucial for the diagnosis of animal diseases. Virus isolation techniques are the gold standard for parvovirus detection, and researchers have developed a wide variety of reagents for parvovirus isolation.
Bluetongue (BT) is a disease that severely affects domestic and wild ruminants, especially sheep, which can lead to reduced milk production, miscarriage, and even death in ruminants. Therefore, the detection of bluetongue virus is crucial for the control and treatment of bluetongue. BioVenic is a leading supplier of diagnostic reagents for animal diseases, serving veterinarians, animal disease researchers and animal breeders. We can develop a range of bluetongue virus isolation kits for you to study its infection mechanism and transmission route. If you have any needs, please feel free to contact us.
