Caliciviruses are single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses with non-enveloped viral particles approximately 35-39 nm in diameter. Calicivirus genomes are approximately 7-8 kb in length, and their capsids include 180 individual capsid protein molecules. The international committee on taxonomy of viruses (ICTV) divides the Caliciviridae into five genera, Lagovirus, Vesivirus, Sapovirus, Nebovirus and Norovirus. Caliciviruses can infect a variety of animals and cause diseases, such as vesicular rash, stomatitis, respiratory diseases, gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis or bleeding diseases, which seriously threaten animal health.
Figure 1. Raw images of labeled FCV virions were sorted into six classes according to the extent of the conformational change they had undergone, and three-dimensional reconstructions were calculated for every class for which there were sufficient data. Stereo pairs are shown for classes 1 to 5 (A to E, respectively) (Bhella, David, et al. 2011).
Calicivirus poses a threat to the health of animals such as rabbits, cows, pigs, cats and dogs, as well as economic losses to animal breeders. In addition, caliciviruses can also cause outbreaks of foodborne illnesses that affect public health. In order to accurately diagnose calicivirus-related diseases, virus isolation techniques are widely used for the study of viral receptors, entry routes, etc. BioVenic is a company specializing in animal virology research, dedicated to safeguarding the health of poultry, livestock, companion animals and wildlife. We can provide you with a variety of calicivirus isolation kits for the diagnosis of animal diseases. If you have any needs, please feel free to contact us.
