Intestinal viral infection in cats commonly causes inflammation of the intestinal lining, stomach upset, and diarrhea. In some cases, diarrhea may be severe enough to cause life-threatening dehydration. If left untreated, certain virus strains can develop into feline infectious peritonitis, which may be fatal. Viral pathogens which are responsible for gastrointestinal infections in cats are feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline enteric coronavirus (FeCoV), and feline leukemia virus (FeLV), although various viral agents including astrovirus, adenovirus, rotavirus, and vesiviruses (feline calicivirus, FCV). Although current vaccines do not prevent infection in all cases, they significantly decrease the severity of disease and the shedding of virus. This is beneficial to other susceptible cats, particularly those living with the cat being vaccinated.

All cats are vulnerable to gastrointestinal viral infection, but particular breeds are more likely to get the feline panleukopenia virus and have a higher risk of developing a serious form of gastrointestinal disease. The viral neutralization (VN) test detects antibodies capable of neutralizing the infectivity of the virus, and has become a common method for identifying subgroup-specific antibodies against feline gastrointestinal diseases. The premise behind neutralization tests is that poisons or viruses bioactivities are decreased when antibodies bind to them. This technique can be used to detect antibodies, diagnose diseases (by using specific immunosera), or locate their poisons (with defined pathogens). The ability to precisely assess serum samples is one benefit of virus neutralization methods.

Workflow | Details |
Source of virus | Live virus strains and characterized feline enteric coronavirus strains were obtained. |
Collection of samples | Blood samples were obtained from industrial breeding firms. |
VN assay optimization | For the optimal neutralization of homologous antigen and antibody under controlled conditions, variables were tuned during the investigation. |
Centrifugation operation | A suspension of the antigen and the antiserum was centrifuged for five minutes. The air sac aperture was used to inject supernatant. |
Control measures | Serum samples were obtained and were examined for relevant viral exposure. |
