Agglutination is a serological reaction in which particulate antigens (intact pathogenic microorganisms or red blood cells, etc.) are combined with corresponding antibodies, after a certain period of time in the presence of electrolytes, visible agglutination pieces appear. Antigens involved in agglutination are called agglutinogens, and antibodies are called lectins. It can be divided into two categories: direct agglutination reaction and indirect agglutination reaction. The plate agglutination testing is a type of direct agglutination, which is a qualitative test method that can be used to detect unknown antigens with known antibodies. If a newly isolated strain is identified, a known antibody can be added dropwise to the glass slide, and a drop of the bacterial solution to be tested is mixed with it. After a few minutes, if there is visible agglutination, it is a positive reaction. The method is simple and rapid, and can be used for identification of bacterial species and also for bacterial species typing.
