Avian influenza (AI) viruses are classified according to two protein groups: hemagglutinin (“H”) proteins, which range from H1 to H16, and neuraminidase (“N”) proteins, which span from N1 to N9. Neuraminidase proteins are further divided into two groups: group 1, consisting of N1, N4, N5, and N8, and group 2, including N2, N3, N6, N7, and N9.
