Dengue is caused by dengue viruses (DENV), which comprise four serologically distinct positive-strand RNA viruses. Though primarily impacting non-human primates, dengue infections have also been detected in pigs, marsupials, bats, birds, horses, bovids, rodents, and dogs. Over the last twenty years, dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV-3) has been responsible for unexpected epidemics of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in regions such as Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Latin America.
