Since its initial isolation in 1899, the genus Bifidobacterium has been shown to dominate the gut microbiota of breastfed infants. It benefits the host by accelerating the maturation of the immune response, balancing the immune system to reduce inflammation, enhancing intestinal barrier function, and boosting acetate production. Bifidobacterium longum subspecies infantis (B. infantis), in particular, plays a prominent role in the gut microbiota of breastfed infants, providing similar benefits in terms of immune maturation, inflammation suppression, intestinal barrier improvement, and acetate production.
