In microbiology labs, it can be cultured on specially enriched media containing proteins, such as ovoalbumins or animal tissue with myoglobin, under anaerobic conditions. B. anserina acts as a pathogenic agent in poultry, including chickens, turkeys, and ducks, causing a disease known as borreliosis or spirochetosis.
