Chlamydia abortus is responsible for causing abortion and fetal loss in sheep, cattle, and goats across many countries worldwide. It is endemic among ruminants such as cows and sheep and has been linked to abortion in horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, pigs, and humans. Infected females shed the bacteria around ovulation, allowing C. abortus to be transmitted both orally and sexually among mammals.
