It infects pigs, calves, and humans, residing naturally in soil, feces of domestic animals and humans, sewage, the human gastrointestinal tract, and retail meat. Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route, with the bacterium being shed in feces and spreading from one person or animal to another.
