Clostridium tyrobutyricum is a rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium that thrives under anaerobic conditions. It primarily produces butyric acid, acetic acid, and hydrogen gas as fermentation products from glucose and xylose. This organism has been isolated from various sources including raw milk and dairy products, chicken and chicken salad, silage, gley soil, and the fecal material of cattle, beagle dogs, and humans—both adults and infants. C. tyrobutyricum is non-pathogenic to humans and animals.
