Corynebacterium amycolatum is a Gram-positive bacillus that does not form spores and can be either aerobic or facultatively anaerobic. It is capable of fermentation, with propionic acid being the primary end product of its glucose metabolism. As a nonlipophilic coryneform, it is increasingly acknowledged as an important pathogen in both humans and animals, often exhibiting multidrug resistance to commonly used antibiotics.
