Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast belonging to the class Tremellomycetes and is an obligate aerobe, capable of residing in both plants and animals. It is commonly found in bird droppings, particularly those of pigeons. In cats, cryptococcosis stands as the most prevalent systemic fungal disease, occurring when a cat inhales the infectious spores from the Cryptococcus neoformans - Cryptococcus gattii species complex.
