Heartwater, also referred to as cowdriosis, nintas, and ehrlichiosis, is a rickettsial disease transmitted by ticks. Its name originates from the potential accumulation of fluid around the heart or in the lungs of infected animals. The causative agent is Ehrlichia ruminantium, previously known as Cowdria ruminantium, an intracellular Gram-negative coccal bacterium. Predominantly found in sub-Saharan Africa, the disease can occur wherever Amblyomma ticks are present.
