Details:
Hemolysins, also spelled haemolysins, are lipids and proteins that lead to the rupture of red blood cells by compromising the cell membrane. Various strains of E. coli produce a hemolysin responsible for the beta-hemolysis zone observed around bacterial colonies on blood agar. The role of this cytolysin as a factor in bacterial pathogenicity has been confirmed through animal model studies using genetically engineered, isogenic bacterial strains.
