Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a serotype of the bacterial species E. coli, known for producing Shiga-like toxins. It often causes illness, mainly through foodborne transmission, by ingesting contaminated or undercooked food such as raw milk and ground beef that hasn’t been fully cooked. This bacterium is naturally present in the intestines of healthy livestock, including cattle, goats, deer, and sheep.
