As a member of the lactic acid bacteria group, it produces lactic acid, which acidifies the intestinal environment and restricts the growth of harmful intestinal microflora. Additionally, L. salivarius can produce other antimicrobial substances, such as bacteriocins and hydrogen peroxide.
