Mycoplasma spp. are bacteria lacking cell walls and possessing small genomes. Numerous Mycoplasma species are known to colonize the respiratory tract in both humans and livestock, acting as primary pathogens or opportunistic organisms. Mycoplasma equirhinis was first described in 1975 in horses. Although not a primary pathogen, M. equirhinis may contribute to co-infections in the respiratory tract.
