Perkinsus is a genus of alveolates within the phylum Perkinsozoa, consisting of parasitic protozoans that infect mollusks. Some species within this genus are known to cause disease and significant mortality among their hosts. The most infamous member, P. marinus, is responsible for perkinsosis, or dermo, a disease affecting both wild and farmed oysters.
