As an oomycete, Pythium insidiosum is pathogenic in mammals, with infections occurring mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. It particularly affects horses, dogs, and humans. Infection is typically acquired through small wounds that come into contact with water containing motile zoospores or other propagules.
