Details:
Salmonellae are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic bacilli within the Enterobacteriaceae family, primarily known for causing food-borne illnesses. Among them, Salmonella arizonae is a less common species with unique biochemical traits, such as its ability to ferment lactose, utilize malonate, liquefy gelatin, and its inhibition by potassium cyanide. Salmonella enterica subsp. arizonae commonly inhabits the gastrointestinal tracts of reptiles, with snakes serving as the primary reservoir. Most human infections by Salmonella arizonae have been documented in the southwestern United States, where rattlesnake-based products are frequently used for medicinal purposes.
