Details:
Schistosoma mattheei is a prevalent parasite of livestock, with a largely overlooked potential to infect humans. It has been implicated in both female and male genital schistosomiasis. S. mattheei was the third species identified within the S. haematobium group. It was originally described in 1929 by F. Veglia and P.L. Le Roux after they examined adult worms found in the mesenteric veins of a sheep in Cape Province, South Africa.
