Staphylococcus xylosus is a commensal bacterium found on the skin of humans and animals and is commonly present in food. It is more frequently found in animals than in humans. Similar to other Staphylococcus species, S. xylosus is a coagulase-negative bacterium that belongs to the Staphylococcus saprophyticus group. It is widely used as a starter culture for meat fermentation, although a few strains may pose a hazard due to their association with opportunistic animal infections.
