Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis linked to seafood consumption worldwide, commonly associated with eating raw or undercooked seafood. However, not every strain of V. parahaemolyticus is pathogenic. The thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and the TDH-related hemolysin (TRH), encoded by the tdh and trh genes respectively, are regarded as the primary virulence factors in V. parahaemolyticus.
