Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection is the most prevalent form of colibacillosis in young animals, particularly affecting pigs and calves. It also represents a major cause of diarrhea in travelers and children in developing countries. Upon colonizing the small intestine of animals, ETEC produces enterotoxins, which result in diarrhea.
