The virus responsible, foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), is classified into seven immunologically distinct serotypes: O, A, C, Asia 1, and the Southern African Territory (SAT) types 1, 2, and 3. Each serotype exhibits a broad range of antigenically diverse subtypes.
