The domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica), encompassing approximately 1,000 different breeds, originated from this species. They share a close relationship with humans, having served as war pigeons and in medical roles. However, they can also pose a minor risk of transmitting diseases such as histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis.
